Many of the earliest clan and district tartans are said to date from the early 19th century. The first dyes came from vegetable sources such as lichen, moss and alder bark.
Hence the variety of colour references; e.g. muted; weathered; ancient and modern.
Tartans are available in tie weight, light weight, medium weight and heavy weight.
