Many of the earliest clan and district tartans are said to date from the early 19^th century. The first dyes came from vegetable sources such as lichen, moss and alder bark.

Hence the variety of colour references; e.g. muted; weathered; ancient and modern.

Tartans are available in tie weight, light weight, medium weight and heavy weight.
